| Praying Together
Purpose The Bible tells us that whenever two or more gathered in
God’s name, God will be with us. Praying with children is significant
because it invites God to be with them in a powerful, significant way.
When children were brought to Jesus he touched them and so as we pray
for children it is important that we touch them (unless they are
uncomfortable with it) as Christ did.
Praying Together
If a child
is open to praying together you may use any of the spiritual exercises
above or you may simply invite them to tell you what they would pray
about. Then using words or in silence pray for the child.
Praying Together when Apart
After a child finishes a together
prayer or leaves the session it is important that they know that they
are not alone on their spiritual journey. Offer to pray for them and
invite them to write their prayer on an index card and then promise to
pray it daily. But remember, if you offer to pray, you need to do it.
Blessings
A blessing is
simply a formal way of asking God to be near and care for a child.
Invite the child to kneel or sit. Then place your hands on their head
or shoulders and say a blessing.
An example is,
“God, you have loved Jessica
since she was first created, I ask your continued love and care to be
upon Jessica today and forever, Amen.”
Then give them a foot charm and pin it on them. (We will have these available soon).
Or allow them to hold the blessing stone and focus on its beauty as they receive the blessing from God.
