For the Fun of It!Minimize

One of my responsibilities at my church is to work with our preschool and I have to say it is delightful. These little ones teach me so much... this past week they reminded me of how much fun life can be when we relax and just do things "for the fun of it!" instead of "because I have to," or "because it is the right thing to do," and without worrying about "getting it right."

It all started when one of the parents of a three year old, who also happens to be a Senior Minister, at a great UCC church in Colorado Springs, came to lead our spirituality time with the children. He does spiritual drumming and so he came into the room and began showing the children his drums. They were fascinated and he was really engaging them.

He asked, "What do you think this is?" and he pointed to the drum head..."What do you think this is made of?" ALL of the hands of the children shot into the air and as Benjamin started pointed at them they all started guessing... One said, "Paper?" Another said, "Cloth?" Another said, "Something white?" One little boy was waving his hand wildly, begging to be called on! Finally it was his turn and he froze...he had clearly forgotten what he thought it was made of of and then he had a thought. His eyes lit up and he said proudly, "Is it made of pie?"

It cracked me up! And it reminded me that life is fun... sometimes "pie" is the answer! I have laughed so many time thinking of this child's enthusiasm and energy and I keep asking myself, "Is it better to always get the right answer, look perfect, and make sure everyone knows how smart I am?" and while I am doing all this stuff, loose my sense of joy? Or would it be better to let go, be free, stop worrying about "getting it all correct" and shout, "Pie!" and enjoy my life! I don't know about you, but I plan to shout, "pie" much, much more!
