Mother's DayMinimize

Today at church, we watched a brief "What is a Mom?" video. It was very sweet! It described how mom's have unlimited patience, how they are always there to understand their children and there were all these images of mothers being so sweet, so kind and so wonderful to their kids.

I have to be honest with you! I watched the video and instead of feeling really great as a mom--instead of seeing my wonderful self in that video--I started thinking of the times I wasn't any of those things. I thought of times when I was not patient, or kind and when I felt resentful of giving so much of my time to motherhood. Now, these failings weren't daily occurrences, but they happened, and as I watched this sweet video, I felt badly!

After the video, several of us moms stood and talked and I soon discovered I wasn't the only one who felt guilty watching a video about how we were "supposed to be" ALL the time! And I just wanted to tell you--all of you--that I know you love your kids (you wouldn't be reading this blog if you didn't) and I also know that we are humans who will do a great job sometimes and a not so great job others!

So I ask God to be with all of us mothers tonight:

God:
You know how much we love our children. You know that we would do anything for them. And you also know how difficult it is to be all things to them at all times. Help us to notice the times when we are the mothers we strive to be and help those moments to stand out in our minds! Please forgive us for any times we have failed to be the mothers we long to be and help us forgive ourselves!

And for our own mothers, we pray that we might have mercy towards them for times they hurt or failed us and that we might remember the times they showed us love!

Thank you for your love, God, that love which is the model of the perfect mother. Remind us that our love towards our children models your love for them, but only you can love perfectly all the time!

In the name of perfect love, we pray!
Amen
