Chunukah, Advent Wreaths and Christmas LightsMinimize

Today is the sixth day of Chanukah; the second Sunday of Advent and day when many of us, if we haven't already, will put up our Christmas Trees and lights. Lights are more than simply beautiful--they are a sacred and powerful reminder of the message of both Chanukah and Christmas! And a message the world needs to be reminded of desperately.

It is a basic belief for both Christians and Jews that God, who created light desires that light might shine through the darkness.  This past week we have experienced a mall shooting where nine people were shot by someone who had never met them and I just heard of a shooting at a youth mission of four teens, again by a random person.

The war rages on, people starve to death on our streets each day, children have no place to call home, and each time we turn on the news, we wonder what will have happened next!

But the "light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it!" For Christians, Christ is that light and with his resurrection we were shown that God is serious about light. The light of God will shine, does shine and will conquer the darkness!!!

You might not feel much like celebrating this year! Perhaps the pressures of the community, world and your own personal issues are taking the joy out of you. Perhaps you feel so sad, you are having a hard time even having enough energy to decorate. I invite you (all of us!) to hang those lights--and light those candles--because, as we do, we affirm that the truth:

The Light Shines in the darkness and the darkness will not overcome it!!!

Instead of wishing you a merry Advent today--I think I will wish you a BRIGHT Advent--may God's light shine brightly on you and your loved ones today and always!
