The Adults of Harry PotterMinimize

I just finished reading the 7th book about Harry Potter and as I read I noticed that the adults had a very important role--one that I am afraid many of us who work in the spirituality of children have forgotten.

The children in the book, including Harry and his friends, had many skills and were trying their best handle the challenges they faced on their own. But time after time (and don't worry, I won't give away the ending) when the children found themselves in danger they could not handle, an adult was there--allowing them independence and yet at the same time ready and able to step in when needed.

There are many new movements growing in the area of children's spirituality and while I am delighted that children are being taken seriously as spiritual beings who have much to teach adults, I am aware of some adults who are looking to the children of the world to save it!

They look to children to figure out how to bring world peace, clean up the environment, and to repair the brokenness found in many church doctrines. The children are thought to be very spiritual and wise and therefore responsible to "fix our world."

I agree that children are spiritual beings and they bring great wisdom to the world--but like the children in Harry Potter books, they are still children and it is still our responsibility as adults to do all in our power to make this world and our churches places where children are safe and where they are free to be children!

We cannot sit back and wait until our kids, because of their spirituality, fix things--we need to be the spiritual leaders who work hard now.

Harry Potter is a fictional story of children who face evil of all kinds. They were not left alone to solve their problems. They were surrounded by adults caring, protecting and journeying with them.

In real life, our children are also facing evil, pain and fear. My prayer is that we, the adults in their lives, will work hard, pray hard and do whatever it takes to protect them, help them and journey with them!
