At First Steps, I see hurting children and teens and help them discover their inner strength. Many times when we are in crisis and in pain, we can't put our feelings into words. Our pain is deeper than we have words to express. It is the same with children and teens. It isn't that they don't want to share their feelings, it is that they often can't find the words they need to describe them.
So I use symbols to help them begin talking. And of all the symbols we use there is one symbol that children find particularly descriptive of their lives. It is a swirl--it looks like the path Dorothy took as she followed the yellow brick road. You know, you start in the center and walk in circles.
The children see that stone and often will physically cringe. They say things like, "I hate that symbol!" And "That is how my life is--swirly and too fast." They are talking about the crisis they are in the midst of.
I am wondering today though if our lives are not sort of like that symbol everyday. We get up and the pace is so fast and we have so much to do and we are running in a swirly circle! I think, like the children, our lives of hurry, hurry are making us sick!
Perhaps the we need to hear the wisdom of children and work on simplifying the pace of our lives.
God invites us to take a sabbath rest at least one day a week and yet I don't have a single friend who actually does it--do you? As much a I know about sabbath rest, I don't take one either.
Do you?
